Obtaining an ITIN number is absolutely necessary for people who must file a tax return in the United States and who do not have a Social Security Number

What is an ITIN number?

An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a Tax Identification Number provided by the IRS, it is made up of 9 characters, it always starts with the number 9 and a 7 or 8 in the fourth box, for example, 9XX-7X-XXXX

The IRS assigns an ITIN Number to those individuals who must file taxes in the United States, but do not have the possibility of obtaining a Social Security Number (SSN), this can occur when a person is a United States Tax Resident, without being Citizen or Permanent Resident, and had taxable income in the country.

How can I request it?

If you wish to request or renew an ITIN Number you must submit the W-7 form to the IRS, in addition to the required identification documents, one of the problems of this system is that the IRS requests that the identification documents that are sent must be the originals or certified copies by the issuing agency (Passport, Birth Certificate, Identity Card), the IRS will review the documents and respond within approximately 90 days.

It is important that you only request an ITIN Number if you really need it, you can consult with your trusted tax preparer if you will need an ITIN.

Certifying Acceptance Agent

A CAA (Certifying Acceptance Agent) is a person or entity (company or organization) that, in accordance with a written agreement with the IRS, is authorized to assist foreign individuals who do not qualify for a Social Security number but still need an Identification Number (ITIN) to file a Form 1040 and other tax programs. The Certifying Acceptance Agent facilitates the application process by reviewing the necessary documents, authenticating the identity when possible and sending the completed forms to the IRS.

One of the great advantages of this program is that the original documents do not need to be sent to the IRS, they are verified by the authorized agencies, which process with ITIN directly with the IRS.
